Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena chaired a crucial meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Thursday, emphasizing the urgent need for desilting of drains and removal of encroachments to enhance flood preparedness across the National Capital Region.
In the meeting, Mr. Saxena directed multiple agencies, including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and various construction bodies, to swiftly clear debris and construction materials from the Yamuna floodplains. This initiative aims to prevent obstruction to the flow of the Yamuna river, especially in light of ongoing construction activities.
Addressing concerns about recent waterlogging incidents in several parts of Delhi, Mr. Saxena instructed the Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FCD), Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to expedite the desilting of drains. He stressed that all choked drains must be cleared immediately to mitigate the risk of flooding during the monsoon season.
The meeting highlighted the detrimental impact of garbage disposal and construction waste in drains, which exacerbates waterlogging issues in the city. The Lt Governor specifically directed the MCD to intensify monitoring efforts and impose penalties for any illegal dumping in drainage systems.
Acknowledging recent flooding incidents in areas like South Delhi and West Delhi, Mr. Saxena underscored the importance of proactive measures. He commended efforts by agencies to clear debris from the Yamuna floodplains and called for a thorough inspection on July 13 to ensure unobstructed river flow.
In anticipation of potential flood scenarios, the Lt Governor instructed the I&FCD to maintain continuous communication with authorities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh regarding rainfall and water discharge levels. He emphasized the need for robust contingency plans, including the deployment of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams and preparation for possible evacuations.
