Delhi Implements Strict Measures and Fines to Combat Water Crisis Amid Soaring Temperatures

As Delhi grapples with a severe water shortage aggravated by scorching temperatures nearing the 50-degree Celsius mark, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has taken decisive action by imposing fines and deploying teams to curb water wastage.

Washing cars with hoses, utilizing domestic water for commercial purposes, and overflowing water tanks will now incur a hefty fine of ₹2,000, according to directives issued by Delhi’s Minister Atishi, responsible for water supply. The Delhi Jal Board CEO A Anbarasu has been tasked with forming 200 teams to monitor and mitigate instances of water wastage across residential areas.

The intensified measures follow concerns raised by Atishi regarding the reduced water levels due to alleged non-cooperation from the Haryana government in releasing Delhi’s share of water. She highlighted the drop in water levels at the Wazirabad plant, one of Delhi’s six water treatment facilities, leading to acute water scarcity in various regions.

In an effort to manage the crisis, areas receiving water twice daily will now receive it once a day, urging residents to conserve water diligently. Atishi emphasized the need for cooperation and urged citizens to use water judiciously to avoid further exacerbating the situation.

On the political front, the opposition BJP criticized the AAP government for inadequate preparation, attributing the crisis to a lack of foresight and planning. They questioned the government’s reliance on neighboring states for water supply and urged proactive measures to address Delhi’s water demands.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has warned of continued heatwave conditions in Delhi, advising people to limit outdoor exposure and stay hydrated amidst soaring temperatures. The combination of the water crisis and extreme weather underscores the urgent need for efficient water management and conservation measures in the national capital.
