New Delhi witnessed its highest temperature of the season on Wednesday, with the mercury soaring to 32 degrees Celsius, six points above the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
February Temperature Trends
Compared to previous years, February 2024 had a slightly lower maximum temperature of 29.7°C, while February 2023 recorded the same peak temperature of 32°C, as per a report by news agency ANI. The minimum temperature on Wednesday was also 2.9°C above normal, settling at 15.4°C. Humidity levels fluctuated between 59% and 86% throughout the day.
IMD’s Weather Forecast
The IMD has predicted scattered light rain in Delhi on Thursday and Friday, with the possibility of a thunderstorm on Thursday. The change in weather is attributed to a western disturbance over northwest India, which has led to a slowdown in winds. Additionally, a gradual rise in minimum temperatures across north-west India is expected in the coming days.
Delhi’s Air Quality Deteriorates
Despite the warm weather, Delhi’s air quality remained poor, with an average AQI (Air Quality Index) of 247, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The AQI levels recorded in different parts of the city were:
- Anand Vihar – 289
- ITO – 270
- Mundka – 344 (very poor)
- RK Puram – 260
According to the CPCB, an AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as ‘poor’, while 301 to 400 is ‘very poor’, and 401 to 500 is ‘severe’.
Pollution Control Measures Lifted
Until Tuesday, Delhi’s AQI had remained in the ‘moderate’ category for a week. On Monday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifted Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which had been in place to curb pollution levels.
With rain in the forecast, experts anticipate a temporary improvement in air quality over the next few days. However, residents may continue to experience fluctuating temperatures and pollution levels as winter transitions into summer.
