In a recent legal development, the Delhi High Court has directed Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, to remove a video recording of her husband’s court appearance from her social media accounts. This decision comes as part of a larger directive to take down posts related to the video from various social media platforms.
The court’s order stems from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vaibhav Singh, alleging violations of the court’s video conferencing rules during Arvind Kejriwal’s appearance before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on March 28. Sunita Kejriwal is one of five individuals instructed to remove such social media posts.
During the March 28 court session, Arvind Kejriwal, facing charges in the Delhi liquor policy case, addressed Special Judge Kaveri Baweja in person after being produced before the court. Subsequently, audio and video recordings of this address went viral on social media, prompting legal action.
The Delhi High Court has also issued notices to major social media companies such as X, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, instructing them to remove similar content once it is brought to their attention. A division bench comprising Justices Neena Bansal Krishna and Amit Sharma has listed the matter for further hearing on July 9.
Arvind Kejriwal’s legal journey has been contentious, including his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in March for alleged involvement in the excise policy scam. The Delhi High Court upheld the agency’s action, leading Kejriwal to appeal to the Supreme Court, where he was granted interim bail for campaigning during the Lok Sabha elections.
Following the Supreme Court’s directives, Arvind Kejriwal surrendered to Tihar Jail authorities on June 2. Meanwhile, Sunita Kejriwal, a former bureaucrat, actively campaigned for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the elections, although the party did not secure any seats in Delhi.
