A shocking incident of fratricide occurred at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Thursday evening, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers, including the shooter, and injuries to eight others.

The incident took place at around 8 PM at the CRPF’s 120th battalion camp in Lamsang. According to officials, a CRPF jawan suddenly opened fire on his colleagues using his service weapon before turning the gun on himself.

The sudden attack left two CRPF personnel dead on the spot, while eight others sustained injuries. The injured personnel were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for treatment.

Manipur Police confirmed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A jawan of the 120th Battalion of CRPF opened fire at colleagues, killing two before shooting himself. Senior officers of CRPF and the police have reached the spot to assess the situation.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the motive behind the shooting, and senior officials from both the CRPF and Manipur Police are on-site.

Fratricide incidents among security forces have been a growing concern, often linked to stress, extended duty hours, and mental health challenges faced by personnel.
