In a shocking incident, a crown presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Jeshoreshwari temple in Bangladesh has been stolen. The theft occurred at the historic temple located in Shyamnagar, Satkhira district, on Thursday afternoon.
The crown, made of silver and gold-plated, was gifted during PM Modi’s visit to the temple in March 2021. At the time, the Prime Minister placed the crown on the head of the deity, Goddess Kali, as a symbolic gesture of respect and reverence. This visit marked PM Modi’s first international trip after the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the significance of the event.
The temple priest, Dilip Mukherjee, had left the premises after the day’s worship when the theft was discovered. The cleaning staff later reported that the crown was missing from the deity’s head. Local police have initiated an investigation into the incident and are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the temple to identify the perpetrator.
Inspector Taizul Islam of Shyamnagar Police Station stated, “We are reviewing the temple’s CCTV footage to identify the thief.” The theft of such a significant item has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns over security at religious sites.
The Jeshoreshwari Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths located across India and neighboring countries, revered by devotees as a sacred site dedicated to Goddess Kali. The temple has a rich history, having been built in the 12th century by a Brahman and later renovated by historical figures, including Raja Pratapaditya in the 16th century.
Authorities are working diligently to recover the stolen crown and ensure the security of the temple and its revered artifacts. The theft of the crown not only represents a loss to the temple but also to the cultural and religious heritage it embodies.
