Kerala’s Congress MLA Uma Thomas, representing Thrikkakara, is currently under critical care treatment after suffering severe injuries in a fall at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the MLA fell approximately 15 feet from the VIP gallery, sustaining injuries to her head and spine. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital by volunteers and bystanders.
According to a medical bulletin released on Monday, Uma Thomas’s condition remains serious, and she is currently on ventilator support. The doctors are prioritizing treatment for severe lung injuries with antibiotics, while also monitoring her head injury and spinal fractures. The CT scan conducted on Monday revealed no significant worsening of the head injury, with no increase in internal bleeding. However, the lung injuries have slightly worsened, and an undisplaced cervical spine fracture was detected.
Despite the critical nature of her injuries, the medical team reported that her vital signs remain stable. Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, and Industries Minister, P Rajeeve, both visited the hospital and discussed her treatment with the medical team. They assured the public that an expert team from the Kottayam Medical College would be joining the hospital’s existing team to provide further care.
P Rajeeve, Kerala’s Law Minister, commented that the MLA’s condition shows signs of improvement but stressed that she needs to be closely monitored over the next 24 hours. Opposition Leader VD Satheesan also expressed concern, stating that initially, her condition was considered grave.
The incident took place during the Mridanga Naadam Bharatanatyam program, which was intended to break a Guinness World Record with approximately 12,000 dancers. Sources from the Congress reported that the fall was likely due to limited space between the front row seats and the edge of the gallery, which was marked off with a ribbon. Uma Thomas reportedly hit her head on the concrete ground after falling from the gallery.
Visuals from the event quickly spread on social media, showing the MLA being lifted unconscious and rushed to the hospital. The program, which was scheduled to be inaugurated by Kerala’s Culture Affairs Minister, Saji Cherian, was overshadowed by the tragic incident.
As the situation develops, all eyes remain on Uma Thomas’s recovery as she continues to receive intensive care in the hospital.
