In a tragic incident on Saturday afternoon, a two-storey banquet hall in northwest Delhi’s Mahendru Enclave collapsed, resulting in the death of one labourer and injuries to two others. The collapse occurred around 2:45 p.m. during a period of heavy rainfall.
The building, which had been undergoing repairs, was initially reported as an abandoned structure. However, it was later confirmed that the old building, approximately 50 years old, was being used as a banquet hall. The incident took place while the labourers were having their lunch.
Emergency services, including local police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, and the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), were quickly deployed to the scene. Three individuals—Vishal, Pawan, and Jai Singh—were pulled from the rubble and transported to nearby hospitals. Vishal, a 28-year-old JCB crane driver, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital in Ashok Vihar. Pawan is being treated at ESI Hospital in Basai Darapur, while Jai Singh is also at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital.
The collapse resulted in significant damage to nearby vehicles, including two four-wheelers and two scooters. The rescue operation, which lasted over four hours, involved three fire tenders and was complicated by the presence of a mobile service provider’s tower installed on the building’s terrace.
Police officials have stated that the building had been closed for several years but was being repaired due to its dilapidated condition. The incident has raised concerns about building safety and the conditions under which repairs are conducted.
