Two police constables were tragically killed and four others injured in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district when suspected Maoists triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) during a security operation. The incident occurred at Tarrem, as the team of security forces, including the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), was returning from a search operation.
Identified as Bharat Sahu and Satyer Singh Kange, the constables were part of a joint effort between Chhattisgarh Police and CRPF’s CoBRA unit to target Maoists from Darbha Division, West Bastar Division, and Military Company Number 2 operating in the Bijapur-Dantewada-Sukma area.
The security forces had launched the operation based on intelligence inputs regarding Maoist presence in the region. Immediately following the blast, additional forces were deployed to the area, and arrangements were made for the treatment of the injured Special Task Force (STF) jawans.
This incident comes amidst intensified anti-Maoist operations in the region, highlighted by recent encounters resulting in significant casualties among insurgents. On the same day in Maharashtra’s bordering Kanker district, 12 Maoists were killed by state police forces. Earlier on July 9, another Maoist was neutralized in Kanker, bringing the total number of Maoist fatalities in Chhattisgarh to 139 this year, with the majority occurring in the Bastar division.
