In a remarkable achievement for India’s space sector, Agnikul Cosmos, a Chennai-based start-up, successfully test-fired its rocket named Agnibaan SOrTeD (Suborbital Tech Demonstrator) on its fifth attempt. The rocket, powered by a semi-cryogenic engine, represents a significant step forward in private space exploration in India.
The launch, which took place at 7.15 am from Sriharikota, was confirmed as successful by Mr S Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This milestone marks the first-ever controlled flight of a semi-cryogenic liquid engine realized through additive manufacturing in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the achievement, calling it a momentous occasion for India’s space sector and a testament to the remarkable ingenuity of the country’s youth. The successful launch of Agnibaan rocket, powered by the world’s first single-piece 3D printed semi-cryogenic engine, has garnered national pride and recognition.
Agnikul Cosmos, founded in 2017 by two young aerospace engineers, has shown resilience and determination with each attempt despite facing technical glitches in previous launches. The rocket, weighing 575 kg and 6.2 meters long, lifted off into the Bay of Bengal, demonstrating the potential of India’s private space industry.
The unique aspect of Agnibaan’s engine lies in its use of commercially available aviation turbine fuel and liquid oxygen, making it cost-effective and easily accessible. This innovation opens doors for more efficient and affordable rocket launches from multiple locations, contributing to India’s space capabilities.
The successful launch also signifies India’s progress in 3D printing technology for space applications. Agnikul’s single-piece 3D printed engine reduces quality testing time and enhances production efficiency, paving the way for future advancements in space exploration.
With plans to launch satellites into Low Earth Orbits (LEO) and expand its launch capabilities, Agnikul has attracted significant investments and assembled a talented team of 250 members. The company’s vision of making India a hub for small satellite launches reflects the growing potential of the country’s space industry on the global stage.
The launch of Agnibaan SOrTeD not only marks a historic achievement for Agnikul Cosmos but also signals a promising future for India’s private space endeavors, showcasing the capabilities and aspirations of the nation’s young innovators in the space domain.
