The UT administration in Chandigarh introduced a new shuttle bus service, operated by the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU), encircling popular spots like Rock Garden, Bird Park, and Sukhna Lake. Launched exclusively on weekends and public holidays, the inaugural day of this service attracted 272 riders. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion on these days by designating the road near Sukhna Lake, adjacent to the Lake Club parking, as a no-vehicle zone.
During these restricted vehicle days, private vehicles of visitors will have access to park in the paid parking area at Sector 5 opposite Sukhna Lake and the pit parking facility at Rock Garden, available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to space availability.
The shuttle service operates from 11 am to 8 pm, running at a 5-minute interval from the designated parking lots, charging a nominal fee of ₹10 for a round trip. Commuters can access the shuttle at pick/drop points: Rock Garden, the Gursagar Sahib turn, and Sukhna Lake near the ATC light.
Pradhuman Singh, Director of Transport at UT, mentioned that six CTU buses were deployed on the inaugural day, maintaining a five-minute frequency throughout the service hours. A total of 534 passengers utilized the round trip, generating a revenue of ₹5,340.
The introduction of this shuttle service intends to facilitate hassle-free exploration of key tourist spots, providing a convenient, cost-effective transportation option while reducing traffic congestion on weekends and public holidays in Chandigarh.
