In a devastating accident in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, five first-year MBBS students from Vandanam Medical College lost their lives, and two others were critically injured when their car collided with a Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) passenger bus. The incident occurred on Monday evening around 9 PM.
The students were traveling in a Chevrolet Tavera, reportedly at high speed, when the car attempted to overtake another vehicle. According to eyewitnesses, the car skidded after applying brakes and collided head-on with the state bus, which was traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam.
Fatal Impact
The collision was so severe that the car was completely mangled, with shattered windows and twisted metal, while the bus suffered significant damage to its bonnet. Emergency responders had to cut through the wreckage of the car to rescue the victims.
Three students, identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, and Ibrahim, died instantly, while Devanand and Shreedeep succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital. The remaining two students are undergoing treatment at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital and remain in critical condition.
Bus Passengers Sustain Minor Injuries
Four passengers on the KSRTC bus sustained minor injuries in the accident and are reportedly in stable condition.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are working to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the car lost control while overtaking another vehicle, leading to the fatal crash.

The tragic deaths of these young medical students have left the community and their families in deep mourning. The victims, all in their first year at Vandanam Medical College, had a promising future ahead, which was tragically cut short.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads, especially when overtaking or driving at high speeds, to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.
