Canada’s Transport Ministry has introduced heightened security screening measures for passengers flying to India, a move aimed at ensuring safety amid growing concerns. The additional security protocols, implemented “out of an abundance of caution,” were announced by Transport Minister Anita Anand on Monday. This temporary measure affects all airlines, including Air Canada, which is complying with the new requirements.
In a statement, Air Canada informed passengers traveling to India that security wait times are expected to be longer due to these new mandates. The airline recommended that passengers arrive at least four hours before their flight departure to minimize any disruptions to their travel plans.
“The new security measures, which include additional secondary screenings, are designed to enhance safety,” a spokesperson for Air Canada confirmed. Passengers traveling from major airports, including Toronto Pearson, reported increased wait times for international pre-board screening. A post on X (formerly Twitter) from Toronto Pearson Airport advised passengers to check with their airline for updates and to allocate extra time for security procedures.
While the precise nature of the additional security checks remains unclear, sources have suggested that more thorough screenings are being conducted, particularly for those flying to India.
This heightened security follows a recent warning issued by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which had named specific Air India flights as targets. In a controversial video, SFJ’s general counsel, Gurpatwant Pannun, urged Sikhs to boycott Air India flights, citing security concerns. Although Pannun’s statement did not directly threaten violence, the warning prompted India’s High Commission in Ottawa to raise the issue with Canadian authorities.
In response, Transport Canada has taken precautionary steps to increase security on all flights to India, including those operated by Air India. These measures are expected to continue until further notice, ensuring the safety and peace of mind of passengers flying from Canada to India.
