Amid an ongoing debate about work-life balance, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani shared his thoughts, emphasizing that life becomes simpler when one accepts their mortality and focuses on doing what brings happiness. Speaking to IANS, Adani addressed the increasingly debated work-life balance, especially in light of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy’s recent remarks advocating for a 70-hour work week.
Adani pointed out that work-life balance is a personal matter and shouldn’t be dictated by others. “Your work-life balance should not be imposed on me, and my work-life balance shouldn’t be imposed on you. If someone finds joy in spending four hours with their family, or someone else enjoys spending eight hours with them, that’s their choice,” Adani said.
In a light-hearted remark, he added, “If you spend eight hours with family, ‘biwi bhaag jayegi’ (the wife will run away).” His comment aimed to underscore the importance of individual happiness and time spent doing things one enjoys, whether it is family time or work.
The conversation took place against the backdrop of Narayana Murthy’s controversial statement regarding the work ethic in India. Murthy, at the Indian Chamber of Commerce centenary launch, had suggested a 70-hour work week as a way to help India compete with more advanced economies. He argued that with millions of people still living in poverty, working hard was essential to lift the nation up.
Adani, however, stressed that work-life balance is not about quantity but about doing what one loves. “For us, it’s either family or work—we don’t live in another world. Our children notice that too,” Adani said. “When you realize that no one is here permanently, life becomes simple.”
The contrasting views of Adani and Murthy reflect a broader debate in India about balancing the need for economic growth with personal well-being. While Murthy’s viewpoint advocates for a rigorous work schedule to improve national competitiveness, Adani’s stance encourages a more individualized approach, where happiness and balance are key components.
This exchange highlights the ongoing tension between hard work and quality of life, as both business leaders express their visions for India’s future.
