Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the tenth anniversary of the ‘Make In India’ initiative on Wednesday, praising its transformative impact on the nation’s manufacturing and innovation landscape. In a blog post, PM Modi emphasized the collective determination of India’s 1.4 billion citizens in propelling the initiative towards success.
“This milestone is a moment to salute our country’s vast talent pool, whose hard work has made ‘Make In India’ a roaring success,” PM Modi stated, adding that the initiative has turned India into a global focal point of attention and curiosity.
Highlighting key achievements, PM Modi noted that the initiative has significantly impacted various sectors, including a remarkable expansion in mobile manufacturing. In 2014, India had just two mobile manufacturing units, a number that has surged to over 200 today. The Prime Minister shared that mobile exports skyrocketed from ₹1,556 crore to an impressive ₹1.2 lakh crore—a staggering increase of 7,500%. Currently, 99% of mobile phones used in India are now manufactured domestically, positioning the country as the second-largest mobile manufacturer in the world.
PM Modi also underscored advancements in the steel industry, stating that India has become a net exporter of finished steel, with production rising by over 50% since 2014. The semiconductor manufacturing sector has attracted investments exceeding ₹1.5 lakh crore, with five new plants set to produce more than 7 crore chips daily. In the realm of renewable energy, India has emerged as the fourth-largest global producer, achieving a 400% increase in capacity over the past decade.
The Prime Minister expressed pride in the growth of the electric vehicle industry, which has evolved from virtually non-existent in 2014 to a valuation of $3 billion today. He also highlighted the substantial rise in defense production exports, which have surged from ₹1,000 crore to ₹21,000 crore, serving more than 85 countries.
Moreover, PM Modi celebrated the indigenous production of advanced trains, such as the Vande Bharat, and missiles like BrahMos, all carrying the ‘Make In India’ imprint. He articulated that the initiative has empowered the underprivileged to dream big, instilling confidence in their ability to create wealth.
The introduction of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes was described as a game-changer that has facilitated massive investments and generated numerous jobs. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s growing role in the global supply chain and commended the nation’s youth for their contributions to the burgeoning start-up ecosystem.
In closing, PM Modi urged young Indians to actively participate in the ‘Make In India’ initiative, asserting that the country is on a growth trajectory despite facing unprecedented challenges, such as the global pandemic. “We are being recognized as drivers of global growth, and we must strive for excellence. Zero defect should be our mantra,” he concluded.
