Jishnu Mohan, a software engineer based in Bengaluru, recently took to social media platform X to express his concerns about the recession in the technology sector, only to find himself out of a job shortly thereafter. Mohan claimed that he was terminated from his position at Forma, a life benefits platform, as part of a broader corporate restructuring initiative, merely a day after he posted about the industry’s downturn.
Having been with Forma for four years since 2019, Mohan found himself unexpectedly unemployed despite being a full-time employee who was working remotely from Kochi, Kerala. His initial tweet on February 7th lamented his unease amidst the prevailing tech recession, marking a downturn in his career confidence.
In an update shared on February 8th, Mohan revealed the swift turn of events, stating, “That was quick. I got laid off today, as part of reorg. So actively looking for a job now.” Mohan clarified that his original tweet was made in response to industry trends and layoff news from multinational corporations, unaware at the time of his company’s plans for downsizing.
Mohan’s post garnered significant attention, amassing over 1.36 lakh views on X, with social media users rallying to support him. Many users offered job opportunities, shared his resume with relevant contacts, and offered words of encouragement amidst his job search.
The tech industry’s ongoing struggles were underscored by Mohan’s experience, as it grapples with another wave of job cuts in 2024. Layoffs.fyi, a startup tracking industry layoffs since the onset of the pandemic, reported that approximately 32,000 tech workers have lost their jobs so far this year.
Mohan’s story serves as a stark reminder of the uncertainties faced by employees in the tech sector, highlighting the power of social media in both raising awareness and rallying support during times of adversity. As he embarks on his job search journey, Mohan’s experience resonates with many others navigating the ever-changing landscape of the tech industry.
