Bengaluru has set a new weather record, experiencing its coldest day of 2024 so far. On Friday, the city’s maximum temperature dropped to a chilly 23.8 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This significant temperature dip marks a deviation from the typical July temperatures in the “Garden City.”
The record-breaking cold spell is attributed to a combination of meteorological factors. A prominent offshore trough forming over coastal Karnataka has been instrumental in bringing cool, moist air from the Arabian Sea into the interior regions of the state. This trough has led to a notable drop in Bengaluru’s temperature, with the city seeing a decrease of 3.2 degrees Celsius in less than 24 hours. Thursday’s high of 27 degrees Celsius plummeted to 23.8 degrees on Friday, marking the coldest day of the year.
CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, highlighted the unusual nature of the temperature drop: “In less than 24 hours, Bengaluru witnessed a drop of 3.2 degrees Celsius in its daytime temperature. While the city recorded 27 degrees Thursday, it clocked 23.8 degrees Friday and thus making it the coldest day of 2024 so far.”
The city has been under the influence of westerly winds, which have intensified and transported large amounts of moisture from the sea. This moisture has interacted with the existing weather patterns, contributing to the significant reduction in temperatures. The result has been persistently cloudy and wet weather, which is expected to continue for at least another day.
Additionally, Karnataka has been experiencing heavy rainfall with monsoon precipitation recorded at 22 percent above normal since June. This enhanced rainfall has further influenced the current weather conditions in Bengaluru.
