Bengaluru is set to experience a significant dip in temperatures over the next two days, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a drop to as low as 10.2°C in certain parts of the city on Saturday. The chilly conditions are expected to bring severe cold, accompanied by dense fog in the early mornings, causing disruptions for commuters.
The sharp decline in temperatures is being attributed to a cold wave sweeping across North India, which is affecting weather patterns in Bengaluru. The forecasted low of 10.2°C is notably lower than the city’s average January temperature of 15.8°C, marking a drastic change in the weather.
The IMD has issued an alert regarding reduced visibility due to the dense fog, urging drivers and commuters to exercise caution, particularly during the early morning hours. Historically, Bengaluru’s lowest-ever recorded temperature was 7.8°C, observed on January 13, 1884. More recently, January 2012 and January 2019 saw the temperature dipping to around 12°C, while December 2023 also recorded a low of 12.2°C—its coldest December in 14 years.
In addition, the IMD predicts that the ongoing cold wave will continue to affect various parts of Karnataka, with temperatures in interior regions expected to decrease by around 2°C in the coming days. The city, known for its pleasant weather, is bracing for even colder temperatures, with many areas preparing for the chill.
The cold front, combined with dense fog, is expected to disrupt normal life in the tech capital, reminding citizens of the city’s occasional plunges into near-freezing temperatures. It’s advisable for residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this cold spell.
