Two Earthquakes of Magnitudes 5.7 and 4.1 Hit Manipur Within an Hour

Manipur experienced two back-to-back earthquakes within an hour on Wednesday, with magnitudes of 5.7 and 4.1, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Manipur centre. The tremors were felt across several parts of the state, but no reports of damage or casualties had emerged at the time of filing this report.

The first earthquake struck at around 11:06 AM, followed by the second at approximately 12:20 PM. The epicentre for both was identified as Kamjong district in Manipur, as per IMD data.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, also confirmed the details, tweeting, “Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred on 05-03-2025, 12:20:43 IST, Lat: 24.70 & Long: 94.34, Depth: 66 km, Location: Bishnupur, Manipur, India.”

An official from a central government office near Imphal airport reported feeling the tremors, particularly from the first quake.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Myanmar also recorded two mild earthquakes. The NCS reported that a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck at 3:36 AM, followed by another of magnitude 4.5 at 3:54 AM.

Manipur and the surrounding northeastern region fall within a high seismic activity zone, making them prone to frequent earthquakes. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
