In a disturbing incident from Ayodhya, an individual identified as Arshad has been booked by the Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly pronouncing ‘triple talaq’ to his wife, Maryam, following her praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The case highlights not only the contentious practice of triple talaq but also accusations of domestic abuse.
According to reports, Maryam praised the development of Ayodhya, including the city’s roads and beautification efforts, which she attributed to the work of Modi and Adityanath. This apparently angered Arshad, leading to severe repercussions. Maryam has accused her husband of physical abuse, including being beaten and having “hot daal” (lentils) thrown at her. Additionally, she claims that Arshad’s family attempted to strangle her on the same day he pronounced triple talaq.
The Supreme Court of India had declared the practice of triple talaq unconstitutional on August 22, 2017. This practice allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife by repeating the word ‘talaq’ three times, effectively ending the marriage. Despite the ruling, incidents involving triple talaq continue to surface.
Maryam, a resident of Bahraich, alleged in a video clip that after her marriage to Arshad on December 13, 2023, she was sent back to her parental home after her praise for the political leaders upset her husband. She later returned to Ayodhya with the help of relatives, but the situation deteriorated when Arshad repeated the abusive behavior and pronounced triple talaq.
Following Maryam’s complaint, police have booked Arshad and seven other family members under various charges, including assault, abuse, threats, and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to address the allegations of domestic violence and illegal marital dissolution.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by women in India regarding personal rights and protection against domestic abuse. The police and legal system are expected to scrutinize the case closely to ensure justice for Maryam and to address the broader implications of such practices.
