Authorities have issued an avalanche alert for several high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh for the next 24 hours, as the state braces for a wet spell until Friday, according to the Meteorological Department.
The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh, has classified the alert into different levels based on risk. An orange alert (unsafe conditions) has been issued for Chamba (above 2,850 metres) and Lahaul-Spiti (above 2,900 metres). A yellow alert (partly unsafe conditions) is in place for Kullu and Kinnaur (above 2,900 metres), while a green alert (isolated instability) has been issued for Shimla district.
Weather Update and Temperature Variations
Over the past 24 hours, Himachal Pradesh has remained mostly dry, with only light rainfall recorded in some areas. Pandoh received 3.5 mm of rain, while Chamba and Dalhousie recorded 1 cm each. Thunderstorms were also observed in Kangra district.
The Met office forecasts light rain and snowfall in isolated areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and higher reaches of Chamba from Wednesday to Friday.
In terms of temperature, Tabo recorded the lowest at -8°C, while Dhaulakuan in Sirmaur was the warmest at 30.3°C during the day.
Rainfall Surplus in March
From March 1 to March 18, Himachal Pradesh received 75.3 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal 67.7 mm for this period by 11%.
Authorities have urged residents and travelers to exercise caution in avalanche-prone areas and stay updated with weather advisories.
