"India Launches ₹45,000 Crore Auction for Critical Minerals Vital to Economic Growth and Security"

In a strategic move to mitigate potential supply chain risks and bolster critical industries, India commenced the first tranche of its Critical and Strategic Minerals Auction. Union Minister of Mines, Pralhad Joshi, unveiled this groundbreaking initiative, featuring 20 blocks estimated at a cumulative worth of ₹45,000 crore, encompassing vital minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and titanium.

These minerals, spread across states including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chattisgarh, and Jammu and Kashmir, hold immense significance. The auction grants composite licenses for 16 blocks, permitting exploration, while mining licenses will be allocated for the remaining four.

The selection process for bidders centers on the highest percentage of royalty rates quoted, with tender document sales commencing immediately. Minister Joshi encouraged prospective bidders to participate actively in this transformative endeavor.

This auction gains paramount importance due to the pivotal role these minerals play in India’s economic progress and national security. Lithium, a crucial component in lithium-ion batteries powering mobile communications and electric vehicles, stands at the forefront. As India targets 50% cumulative electric power from non-fossil sources by 2030, these minerals emerge as linchpins in achieving this ambitious goal.

Moreover, cobalt’s significance in storage applications and titanium’s widespread use in defense highlight their indispensable nature. Officials emphasize the risks posed by a lack of availability or concentration of extraction in select countries, accentuating supply chain vulnerabilities. These minerals, including graphite and rare earth elements, are pivotal for future technologies.

Industries beyond electric vehicles and defense, such as agriculture and pharmaceuticals, also rely on these minerals, underscoring their multifaceted significance. Minister Joshi revealed plans for a total of 100 blocks earmarked for auction, with 20 being part of the inaugural tranche, hinting at further auctions in the future.

As India charts its course toward renewable energy and technological advancements, this auction marks a pivotal step in securing crucial mineral resources, ensuring self-sufficiency, and fortifying key sectors crucial for the nation’s progress.
