In a heated debate surrounding religious attire in educational institutions, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s recent statement on considering the withdrawal of the hijab ban has sparked a flurry of reactions across the political spectrum.
The controversy gained momentum when AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi demanded the Congress-led government in Karnataka to issue an order revoking the ban on hijabs. Owaisi criticized the delay in action, pressing for an immediate resolution, stating, “They simply have to release an order allowing people to wear whatever they want.”
The Congress government, in power for the past seven months, faced strong criticisms from various quarters, including BRS MLC K Kavitha, who accused the party of inconsistency in implementing promises made during the elections. Kavitha condemned the lack of action on their commitment to lift the hijab ban, labeling it as a failure to follow through on assurances.
Responding to the growing pressure, CM Siddaramaiah declared his government’s intent to retract the hijab ban order imposed by the previous BJP-led administration. However, Siddaramaiah clarified that the decision is under consideration and subject to discussions within the government.
The CM’s stance found support within his cabinet, with ministers like Priyank Kharge, HK Patil, and Madhu Bangarappa affirming the government’s commitment to aligning with constitutional principles. They emphasized the importance of policies promoting inclusivity and development while distancing themselves from politicizing the issue.
Contrarily, the announcement drew criticism from BJP leaders, including former CM Basavaraj Bommai, who accused Siddaramaiah of diverting attention from critical issues such as the state’s drought and other pressing concerns.
The hijab controversy ignited in January 2022 after the alleged barring of six girls wearing hijabs from entering Government PU College in Udupi, sparking protests over their denied entry.
Former CM Bommai highlighted the need to maintain decorum and respect the law while cautioning against attempts to incite division in society, calling the CM’s statement a political move.
As the debate rages on, the Karnataka government finds itself at the center of a contentious issue that intertwines religious freedom, educational policies, and political maneuvering. The deliberation on the withdrawal of the hijab ban remains a hotly debated topic, stirring diverse opinions and raising questions about the government’s priorities amidst ongoing challenges faced by the state.
