Andhra Pradesh Launches Major Crackdown on Social Media Posts, 39 Arrested

Latest newsAndhra Pradesh Launches Major Crackdown on Social Media Posts, 39 Arrested

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a sweeping crackdown on social media activity targeting political figures, with a focus on posts allegedly designed to incite conflict. In the latest action, authorities have filed 100 cases, arrested 39 individuals, and issued 67 notices regarding online content that could escalate tensions between different groups.

The crackdown specifically targets posts directed at high-profile leaders and their families, including Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s wife Bhuvaneshwari, his son and minister N. Lokesh’s wife Brahmini, as well as Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s daughters. Additionally, the state Congress chief Y. S. Sharmila has been targeted in several posts, with police asserting that such content could lead to social unrest.

Chief Minister Naidu has urged his party members to respond with dignity to these provocative online posts, emphasizing that they should not engage in any behavior that could further escalate tensions. Despite his call for restraint, the opposition, led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has voiced strong criticism. The opposition claims that their activists have been unfairly targeted, with 650 notices issued, 147 cases filed, and 49 arrests made in just a week.

Reddy’s party accuses Naidu’s government of failing to deliver on the promises made during the elections, specifically the “Super Six” assurances. Reddy also questioned why the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) hasn’t faced similar legal actions for its own alleged misdeeds, accusing the government of using the legal system to stifle dissent.

In a related development, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma was summoned by the Andhra Pradesh Police for allegedly sharing morphed images of Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on social media. Varma has been asked to appear before the investigation officer next week and has confirmed his intention to cooperate with the authorities.

The ongoing crackdown on social media posts is a part of a broader effort by the state government to maintain public order, though it has sparked significant debate regarding freedom of expression and the role of social media in political discourse. The outcome of this crackdown could set a precedent for future government responses to online content deemed harmful to public peace.
