Amritpal Singh, the controversial pro-Khalistan leader and newly elected Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib, is scheduled to take oath as a Lok Sabha member on July 5, despite being detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail.
Amritpal Singh’s oath-taking ceremony follows extensive efforts by state and central agencies to facilitate his temporary release for the parliamentary procedure. According to sources within the Punjab government, arrangements are being made to airlift him from Dibrugarh to Delhi for the oath ceremony.
“The Punjab government has completed all necessary procedures to facilitate Amritpal’s oath-taking as an MP. He will take oath on July 5 and will be returned to Dibrugarh Jail thereafter,” stated a senior state government official.
Amritpal Singh’s legal advisor, Imaan Singh Khara, confirmed that a request was forwarded by the Punjab government to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking temporary release or parole under NSA Section 15 to enable him to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
Section 15 of the NSA allows for the temporary release of detainees under specified conditions, subject to government approval. The process involved multiple levels of administrative coordination, including communication between the jail superintendent, Amritsar deputy commissioner, and state government authorities.
Rajdev Singh Khalsa, another legal representative of Amritpal Singh, explained, “The Punjab home secretary has forwarded the request to the Lok Sabha Speaker. As per protocol, the Speaker will consider the request within a stipulated period.”
This development comes shortly after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) granted permission for another detained leader, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, to take oath as a Lok Sabha member. Rashid, currently in Delhi’s Tihar jail, won from the Baramulla seat in Jammu and Kashmir.
Amritpal Singh, known for his active role in Sikh politics, secured a significant victory in the Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib, defeating his closest rival by a substantial margin. His upcoming oath-taking has drawn attention amid political and legal debates surrounding detainment and parliamentary privileges.
