Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh: In a tragic accident early Monday morning, two women devotees lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries when an ambulance struck them on their way to Tirumala, officials reported.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. between Rangampeta and Mangapuram in Tirupati district. A 108-ambulance traveling from Piler hit the devotees from behind, according to local police.
“The ambulance hit seven devotees, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to five others,” an official told PTI. Police have registered a case under Section 106, Clause 1 of the BNS and are investigating the matter.
Possible Cause: Fog and Low Visibility
Tirupati Superintendent of Police L. Subba Rayudu suggested that dense fog in the early morning hours may have been a contributing factor to the accident.
He urged pilgrims walking to the Tirumala temple to exercise caution and stay on the sides of the road to avoid such mishaps. The SP highlighted that winter nights often experience reduced visibility due to fog, making the roads hazardous.
Devotee Safety Emphasized
The tragic incident has prompted renewed emphasis on safety for pilgrims, especially those undertaking the journey on foot. Authorities are considering measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Further details about the condition of the injured devotees and the ambulance driver are awaited.
