As the Enforcement Directorate (ED) extends the remand of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren by an additional five days, new allegations have emerged regarding the conditions of his detainment. Advocate General Rajeev Ranjan, representing Soren, has alleged that the ED kept him confined in a basement room devoid of sunlight and subjected him to constant monitoring by armed guards, even during his sleep.
Soren’s initial five-day remand, which commenced on February 2, has been prolonged, totaling 120 hours of interrogation within that period, as stated by the Advocate General. During this time, Soren participated in the floor test of the Champai Soren government on February 5, where the coalition secured victory with a majority of 47 to 29. Prior to the vote, Soren addressed his arrest, attributing it to societal oppression faced by Dalits and tribals and implicating the governor’s office in his apprehension.
Describing January 31 as a dark day in Indian history, Soren accused the BJP of preventing tribal leaders from completing their terms in office, a sentiment reiterated after his return to the ED office following the floor test. Meanwhile, February 7 marked Soren’s 18th wedding anniversary, celebrated by his wife Kalpana Soren Murmu, who expressed unwavering support and confidence in her husband’s resilience amidst adversity.
