In a significant development, Adani Enterprises Limited, the flagship company of the Adani Group, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to invest Rs 50,000 crore over the next 10 years in setting up 1 GW hyperscale data centre infrastructure in the state. The MoU was formalized on January 17 at the World Economic Forum 2024 in Davos, in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.

The hyperscale data centre infrastructure, strategically located in key areas such as Mumbai and Pune, aims to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources. This initiative is anticipated to contribute significantly to the enhancement of green energy infrastructure in Maharashtra, aligning with global sustainability goals. Moreover, it is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for approximately 20,000 individuals, according to a press release from the Adani Group.

The Adani Group’s commitment to deemed distribution investments is poised to play a crucial role in powering the proposed 1 GW hyperscale data centre infrastructure. The emphasis on renewable energy aligns with the broader environmental agenda, reinforcing the group’s dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

“The Maharashtra government is keen on promoting information technology-related infrastructure and services and considers the proposed hyperscale project to be economically and socially beneficial to the state,” the release stated, highlighting the positive reception of the project by the government.

It is noteworthy that Mumbai has surpassed many major global cities in its share of renewable energy. In 2023, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) supplied up to 38 percent of electricity to Mumbai consumers from renewable sources. AEML aims to nearly double this figure to 60 percent by 2027, showcasing a substantial commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives in the metropolitan area.

The strategic investment by the Adani Group not only signifies a boost to Maharashtra’s technological infrastructure but also underscores the state’s growing prominence in the evolving landscape of renewable energy and data center development. As the hyperscale data centre project unfolds, it is poised to contribute significantly to the economic and environmental progress of Maharashtra.
