Delhi Police detained several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters during a Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals IPL match at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Tuesday. The supporters were reportedly raising slogans against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The AAP supporters, part of the party’s student wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), were detained for creating what the police termed as a “public nuisance” at one of the audience stands. The incident occurred amidst the match where slogans supporting Kejriwal and chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” were heard.
A video shared on the official AAP account showed the supporters wearing t-shirts featuring a photo of Arvind Kejriwal behind bars and a slogan “jail ka jawab vote se” (answer to jail through votes). The AAP, in a press statement, labeled Kejriwal’s arrest as “illegal” and condemned the action.
This development came shortly after Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until May 20 in a case related to the excise policy. Additionally, the Supreme Court did not pass any immediate order on Kejriwal’s interim bail application, expressing concerns about interference in governmental functions if bail were granted.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, was told by the bench that if the interim bail is approved, the court does not want the Delhi CM to perform official duties. The court emphasized a non-interference stance in government operations while considering the plea.
