A non-resident Indian (NRI) was critically injured in a shocking attack at his home on the outskirts of Amritsar, Punjab, today. The assailants, who remain unidentified, entered the residence of Sukhchain Singh, an American citizen, and fired three bullets at him in the presence of his wife and minor children. The violent incident was captured on CCTV, showing Singh’s family members desperately pleading with the attackers.
According to reports, the attackers approached Singh at his house in Daburji village, demanding ransom. When Singh resisted their demands, they opened fire, hitting him in the head and near the chest. Singh was immediately rushed to a hospital in Amritsar where he is being treated for critical injuries.
The Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav has directed the Amritsar Police Commissioner to expedite the investigation and ensure the arrest of the culprits. Special DGP Rajender Dhoke, who is overseeing the case, is expected to arrive in Amritsar later today. The police are leveraging the CCTV footage to track down the attackers.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security situation in Punjab. Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler criticized the state’s deteriorating law and order, pointing out that the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is frequently shielded by bullet-proof glass during public appearances. Kler has called for Mann’s resignation, attributing the incident to the continued presence of gangsters in the region.
