In a significant development in the high-profile murder case of Harprit Singh, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed Kuldeep Singh, the victim’s uncle, to report to the Sector-36 police station by Wednesday or face the cancellation of his bail in a separate corruption case. The court’s directive follows a protection plea filed by Baljeet Kaur, Harprit Singh’s mother, who alleges a serious threat to her life and her family’s safety from Kuldeep Singh.
Retired Punjab Police Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Malvinder Singh Sidhu is accused of murdering his son-in-law Harprit Singh on August 3. The shooting occurred in the District Courts Complex, Sector 43, Chandigarh, where Harprit was present for a mediation session concerning a matrimonial dispute with Sidhu’s daughter.
Baljeet Kaur, 62, has claimed that Kuldeep Singh was complicit in the murder and had a presence at the court complex on the day of the shooting. She expressed grave concerns for her and her family’s safety, alleging that Kuldeep’s association with Sidhu has created a perilous situation. The High Court’s order demands Kuldeep Singh’s presence at the police station for investigation into these threats.
Kuldeep Singh, who is also involved in a corruption case alongside Sidhu, had been granted interim bail in May. The court had initially agreed to this bail to allow him to present an affidavit of honesty. However, the recent allegations and the necessity for security measures have prompted the court to take strict action. Failure to comply with the court’s order may result in the revocation of his bail.
In related developments, retired AIG Sidhu has been sent to 14-day judicial custody until August 20. His defense counsel has filed an application requesting the preservation of crucial CCTV footage from several locations, including the Advocate Parking Area and his residence, from the morning of August 3. The defense argues that these recordings are vital for the investigation and to clear Sidhu’s name, as they intend to prove that Sidhu was alone during the incident.
The case continues to draw significant attention as the investigation progresses and the legal proceedings unfold. The bail plea for Kuldeep Singh is scheduled for further consideration on August 7.
