In a troubling development, the Indian External Affairs Ministry has revealed that the United States has deported 48 Indian students over the past three years without providing any official explanation. The issue was brought to light by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh during a Lok Sabha session on Friday.
The revelation came in response to questions raised by BK Parthasarathi regarding the number of Indian students deported from the US and the reasons behind their expulsion. Singh stated that while the Indian government has been notified of the deportations, the US authorities have not officially communicated the specific grounds for these actions.
The ministry speculated that common reasons for such deportations might include unauthorized employment, unapproved withdrawal from classes, expulsion, suspension, or failure to report Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment. Any of these issues could potentially result in the termination of a student’s visa, rendering their stay in the US illegal.
Singh emphasized that the Indian government is actively working to strengthen bilateral relations with the US to ensure legal mobility for students and to address illegal migration. Measures are also being taken to educate Indian citizens about safe and legal travel abroad, both at the central and state levels.
The Indian government’s call for clarification underscores the need for transparency and proper communication between countries regarding visa and immigration matters, particularly for students seeking education abroad.
