Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides, 70 Roads Shut in Himachal Pradesh

In a significant impact of the monsoon season, Himachal Pradesh witnessed widespread disruption as heavy rainfall triggered landslides, leading to the closure of over 70 roads across the state. The affected roads include the critical Shimla-Kinnaur Road (National Highway 5), which was blocked near the Nathpa sliding point in Kinnaur district, according to officials.

The state’s Emergency Operation Centre reported closures across various districts, with 31 roads affected in Mandi, 26 in Shimla, four each in Sirmaur and Kinnaur, two in Hamirpur, two in Kullu, and one in Kangra. Alongside the road closures, 84 transformers and 51 water schemes have also been impacted by the adverse weather conditions.

Moderate to heavy showers began on Sunday evening, with Malroan recording the highest rainfall at 70 mm. Shimla followed closely with 44 mm, while Kasauli received 38.2 mm of rainfall. Other areas that experienced significant rainfall include Kufri (24.2 mm), Nahan (23.1 mm), Sarahan (21 mm), Mashobra (17.5 mm), Palampur (15 mm), Bilaspur (12 mm), and Jubbarhatti (10.5 mm).

Authorities from the regional Meteorological office in Shimla have issued a ‘yellow’ warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated places on July 11-12. The advisory also highlights potential damages such as impacts on plantation and horticulture, partial damage to vulnerable structures, and disruptions in traffic due to waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Residents and travelers are urged to exercise caution and stay updated with local advisories as authorities continue to manage the aftermath of these weather-related incidents across the state.
