In Guwahati, Assam’s largest city, Hiralal Sarkar persists in his relentless search for his eight-year-old son, Abhinash, who fell into a drain amidst heavy flooding. Despite three days passing since the tragic incident, Hiralal remains determined to find his son, while the city grapples with ongoing inundation.
Abhinash slipped into the drain on Thursday evening after falling from his father’s scooter during torrential rains. Despite his father’s immediate efforts to rescue him, Abhinash could not be reached, leaving behind only his slippers. “I have been searching with an iron rod and have managed to find my son’s sandals,” lamented Hiralal, who continues his search tirelessly, urging authorities to deploy more resources.
State authorities have mobilized a large-scale search operation involving sniffer dogs, super suckers, and excavators to locate Abhinash. Concrete slabs covering parts of the drain downstream are being lifted in hopes of finding the missing boy. Chief Minister Himanta Sarma has personally intervened, instructing rescue teams to intensify efforts in locating Abhinash.
The flood situation in Assam has worsened, claiming six lives in the last 24 hours, with over 23 lakh people affected. In Guwahati, areas like Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and Rukminigaon remain submerged for the fourth consecutive day, exacerbated by the Brahmaputra River flowing above danger levels at several points.
