India’s Heatwave Crisis: 99 Fatalities in Odisha, Water Scarcity Hits Delhi

Latest newsIndia's Heatwave Crisis: 99 Fatalities in Odisha, Water Scarcity Hits Delhi

India is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, marked by tragic deaths in Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and a critical water shortage in parts of Delhi. The extreme weather conditions have led to a wave of heatstroke-related fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures and infrastructure support.

In Odisha, ninety-nine suspected heatstroke deaths have been reported, primarily from districts like Bolangir, Sambalpur, and Keonjhar. The state government is emphasizing the immediate implementation of heatwave advisories and precautionary actions to mitigate further casualties.

During the final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, thirty-three poll personnel tragically lost their lives. Among the deceased were home guards, sanitation workers, and other essential staff. Additionally, a voter passed away at a polling booth in Ballia’s Sikandarpur area, underscoring the challenges faced during the election period amid extreme heat.

Delhi, experiencing record-breaking temperatures, saw its Mungeshpur area hit 52.3 degrees Celsius, a historic high. The Delhi High Court has expressed concerns about the city’s environmental sustainability, cautioning against unchecked deforestation that could turn Delhi into a barren desert.

Experts have warned that this summer could be one of the hottest in the last century, especially for north India, with temperatures soaring above 45-47 degrees Celsius. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the heatwave conditions and emphasized fire and electrical safety audits in public places to prevent accidents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a slight respite in the coming days, with a gradual reduction in heatwave intensity. Light rain and thundershowers have been observed in some regions, offering temporary relief from the scorching heat.

The heatwave’s broader impact includes water shortages in Delhi, exacerbating the crisis for residents. This environmental challenge underscores the need for sustainable water management and infrastructure development to cope with extreme weather events.

While the IMD predicts a marginal decrease in temperatures, isolated areas in Bihar, Goa, and Odisha are expected to experience hot and humid weather spells. Jammu anticipates relief with possible rain and thunderstorms, providing a break from the prolonged heatwave conditions.
