Delhi experienced a dramatic change in weather as a powerful sand and thunderstorm, accompanied by rain, swept through the city and surrounding areas, bringing relief from scorching heat after several days of intense summer weather. The sudden storm led to disruptions, including the diversion of two Air India flights to Jaipur due to adverse weather conditions.
The national capital had been grappling with soaring temperatures and high humidity levels before the storm hit, causing a significant drop in mercury levels. Social media platforms were flooded with images and videos showcasing the impact of the storm, with trees swaying vigorously and vehicles navigating through turbulent traffic.
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi recorded winds exceeding 50 kmph, with specific areas experiencing even stronger gusts. The advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) urged residents to stay indoors, secure their homes, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
The video footage from the Indira Gandhi International Airport captured the chaotic scene as people sought shelter from the gusty winds, covering their eyes and mouths. Earlier forecasts had predicted a cloudy sky with the likelihood of a dust storm and thunderstorm, accompanied by strong winds ranging from 50-70 km/h, across Delhi and its adjoining areas.
The maximum temperature on Friday settled at 39 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity levels fluctuating between 47 and 64 per cent throughout the day. The sudden change in weather brought a temporary respite from the intense heatwave conditions, highlighting the unpredictability of summer weather patterns in the region.
