“TMC Plans to move ECI against NCW Chief Over Sandeshkhali Incident Following Sting Video”

Latest news"TMC Plans to move ECI against NCW Chief Over Sandeshkhali Incident Following Sting Video"

In the midst of the Sandeshkhali controversy, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its intention to move against Rekha Sharma, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), following the emergence of a sting video. The video, which surfaced on May 4, has reignited tensions in the region, prompting political maneuvers and allegations.

The NCW chairperson had visited Sandeshkhali in February, where she interacted with local women and received complaints of sexual assault. However, a recent video allegedly shows TMC workers coercing women to withdraw their complaints, leading to a fresh wave of accusations and counter-accusations.

The TMC, known for its aggressive stance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has vowed to take the matter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), citing political motivations behind the actions of the NCW chief. Shashi Panja, the state Women and Child Development and social welfare minister, affirmed the party’s decision to escalate the issue at the national level.

The Sandeshkhali saga began in February when villagers, primarily women, demanded action against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates over allegations of sexual assault and land grabbing. The subsequent arrest of Shahjahan and ongoing investigations by agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) have kept the issue in the spotlight.

The BJP has been vocal in its condemnation of the TMC’s alleged exploitation of women for political gains, with figures like Rekha Patra, BJP’s Basirhat Lok Sabha candidate, highlighting the challenges faced by the victims and their families.

Political figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have weighed in on the matter, promising justice for the victims and underscoring the need for impartial investigations. The polarized atmosphere in Sandeshkhali reflects the broader political landscape in West Bengal, where issues of law and order, women’s safety, and electoral strategies intersect.
