An FIR has been filed against journalist Nikhil Wagle in Pune for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leader LK Advani following the announcement of Advani being awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. The FIR was lodged after a complaint was filed by a local BJP leader.
According to police officials, Wagle has been booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 500 (defamation), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Vishrambaug police station. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
In response to the FIR, BJP city unit president Dheeraj Ghate has warned against allowing Wagle to speak at an event titled “Nirbhay Bano” scheduled for Friday. Meanwhile, Arvind Shinde, the Congress city unit chief, has written to the Pune Police commissioner requesting additional security at the event venue while emphasizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression.
The controversy stems from Wagle’s alleged social media post following the announcement of Advani being honored with the Bharat Ratna. In the post, Wagle reportedly referred to Advani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “rioters.” This incited the ire of the BJP, leading to the FIR being filed against Wagle.
In response to the brewing tensions, Wagle took to social media to express his concerns about the threat to the “Nirbhay Bano” meeting, which he claims is aimed at addressing issues related to democracy and the undeclared emergency.
The situation highlights the delicate balance between freedom of speech and expressions of dissent, as well as the potential consequences of making inflammatory remarks in the public sphere. As the investigation unfolds, further developments are expected in this high-profile case.
