"Fresh Snowfall and Rainfall Blanket Jammu and Kashmir, MeT Issues Avalanche Warning"

In a meteorological shift, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall and widespread rainfall on Wednesday, causing a drop in day temperatures across the region. The Meteorological department (MeT) reported that the precipitation affected various areas, with light snowfall occurring in higher reaches, including Gulmarg in north Kashmir, Sonamarg in central Kashmir, and Anantnag in south Kashmir.

According to the MeT, Gulmarg recorded a substantial 26cm of snowfall in the 24 hours ending Wednesday noon, while the tourist resort of Pahalgam in Anantnag experienced 2.6cm of snowfall. The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed rains that contributed to the overall cooling of the region.

Rains also embraced the Jammu division, with the highest precipitation recorded in Batote (15.3mm) and Banihal (14.6mm). MeT Director Mukhtar Ahmad stated that there is a likelihood of generally cloudy weather during the day, with the possibility of light to moderate rain or snow in many places in Jammu and Kashmir until the evening of February 1. Additionally, there is a forecast for heavy snowfall in certain higher reaches of north, north-western, and south Kashmir.

Ahmad cautioned that lower reaches and plains of north, north-western, and south Kashmir may experience a snowfall depth of six to eight inches, while plains of central Kashmir may receive two to four inches during the night and early morning. The following day, February 3, is expected to be generally dry, with the possibility of very light snow at isolated higher reaches. On February 3 and 4, there is a forecast for light to moderate rain and snow in many places across Jammu and Kashmir.

The continuous snowfall over the past three days in higher reaches has led to significant snow accumulation, prompting the temporary closure of roads and important passes. In response to recent weather conditions, an avalanche warning has been issued in six districts. Officials highlight a medium danger level for avalanches above 2,400 meters in Poonch, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours. Furthermore, areas above 2,800 and 3,500 meters in Doda and Ganderbal districts, respectively, face a low danger level for avalanches during the same period.

Residents in these regions are advised to exercise caution, avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
