In anticipation of India’s 75th Republic Day celebrations next week, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has implemented temporary flight restrictions, according to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the government on Friday. The airspace closure, from 10:20 am to 12:45 pm until Republic Day on January 26, is part of the annual security protocol leading up to the grand event. Additionally, the airport is set to shut down completely from 6 am to 9 pm on Republic Day.
The NOTAM specifies that helicopter operations of the Air Force, Army, Border Security Force, and aircraft transporting state Governors or Chief Ministers will remain unaffected by the restrictions. However, commercial flights at one of the world’s busiest airports may experience disruptions during the daily 145-minute closure, adding further complexity to schedules already strained by recent heavy fog-related disruptions.
The government’s decision comes on the heels of weeks of fog-induced delays, diversions, and cancellations that plagued Delhi airport, leading to chaos and frustration among passengers. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently unveiled a six-point action plan to address such disruptions, emphasizing new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for airlines to mitigate passenger inconvenience.
As part of the heightened security measures for Republic Day, Delhi Police have banned the use of paragliders, hang gliders, microlight aircraft, drones, and hot air balloons until February 15. The prohibition also extends to unmanned or remotely piloted aircraft and includes para jumping or parachuting activities. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the event.
In preparation for the big day, Delhi Police’s East District division conducted a mock anti-terror drill at the Akshardham Temple. The exercise evaluates the force’s readiness to respond to diverse crisis situations, underscoring the significance of robust security arrangements surrounding the 75th Republic Day celebrations.
India’s Republic Day Parade will feature France President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest, marking the sixth occasion a French leader has been honored in this capacity. The heightened security protocols reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and orderly celebration of this historic milestone.
