NHAI Announces Deactivation of FASTags with Incomplete KYC after January 31: Steps to Ensure Seamless Transition

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a statement declaring the deactivation of FASTags lacking Know Your Customer (KYC) details after January 31. This move is part of the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative, aimed at discouraging the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles and preventing the linking of multiple electronic toll collection tools to a single vehicle.

Users are urged to complete the KYC process for their latest FASTags to avoid any inconvenience, as only the most recent FASTag accounts will remain active. Previous tags will be deactivated or blacklisted after the specified deadline, according to the NHAI statement.

The NHAI took this action in response to information indicating the issuance of more than one FASTag for a specific vehicle and the distribution of FASTags without complying with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) mandate for KYC. Additionally, the NHAI highlighted instances where FASTags were intentionally not affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen, causing unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconveniencing users of national highways.

FASTag, a pre-paid tag facility utilizing Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, facilitates non-stop traffic movement at toll plazas by enabling automatic toll fee deduction. The central government made FASTags mandatory from February 15, 2021, and vehicles without FASTags are subject to double toll charges at electronic toll plazas nationwide.

To purchase a FASTag, individuals can obtain the sticker-type RFID document from various Point-of-Sale (POS) locations, including banks, national highways fee plazas, Regional Transport Offices, common service centers, transport hubs, bank branches, and petrol pumps. These RFID tags are affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen, allowing RFID readers at toll plazas to deduct toll fees automatically.

To complete the KYC process for FASTag acquisition, individuals need to provide documents such as the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC), identity proof, address proof, and a passport-size photo. Both original and photocopies of these KYC documents are required.

As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to ensure that their FASTag accounts are compliant with KYC requirements to maintain uninterrupted service and contribute to the seamless operation of digital toll payments on national highways.
