Delhi's Minimum Temperature Hits 5.5°C, Air Quality Slips into 'Very Poor' Category

The chill deepens in Delhi as the city’s minimum temperature plummets to 5.5 degrees Celsius, marking a drop of three notches below the season’s average, as reported by the India Meteorological Department. Simultaneously, the city experiences a high of 24.7 degrees Celsius, surpassing the seasonal norm by two degrees, according to the IMD.

Anticipating shallow fog on Sunday, the IMD forecasts temperatures hovering around 25°C for the maximum and 7°C for the minimum, maintaining the city’s wintry grip. Relative humidity fluctuated between 100 percent and 58 percent, contributing to the wintry feel across Delhi.

However, amidst the dropping temperatures, the air quality in the national capital remains a concern. The 24-hour Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 354 as of 4 pm, categorizing the air quality as “very poor.” An AQI in this range raises health concerns, as it signifies increased levels of pollutants in the atmosphere.

The AQI scale, ranging from zero to 500, classifies levels from “good” to “severe-plus.” Delhi’s recent AQI fluctuations underline a persistent challenge in tackling air pollution, impacting the city’s air quality and health standards.

Previously, on Friday, Delhi experienced its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 4.9 degrees Celsius, even lower than Shimla’s minimum temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius, emphasizing the intensifying wintry conditions in the capital city.
