Centre Intervenes as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Clash Over Nagarjuna Sagar Waters

Tensions escalated between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the release of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam waters, prompting the Centre to step in and mediate the dispute. The standoff arose when Andhra Pradesh, just hours before Telangana’s elections, began releasing water from the dam, sparking a contentious situation between the two states.

In an overnight move, nearly 700 Andhra Pradesh police personnel stormed the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, initiating the release of 500 cusecs of Krishna water per hour through the right canal. While Andhra Pradesh officials justified the action as necessary for drinking water purposes, the incident led to a heated exchange between the states.

Andhra Pradesh’s irrigation minister, Ambati Rambabu, clarified the state’s stance, asserting their rights as per the water treaty between the two states. He stated, “We have not flouted any treaty. This water is rightfully ours,” emphasizing Andhra Pradesh’s entitlement to 66% of Krishna water.

With tensions mounting, the Centre intervened, urging both states to revert to the water release status as of November 28. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla proposed the plan during a video conference with officials from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which both states agreed to. To ensure compliance, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will oversee the dam and monitor water distribution to prevent further conflicts.

Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari raised concerns over the Andhra Pradesh police’s alleged intrusion into the dam, damaging CCTV cameras, and releasing water without consent. The move, she contended, disrupted the region’s drinking water supply, particularly for Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, impacting approximately two crore people.

In response, Telangana registered cases against Andhra Pradesh police in Nalgonda district, reflecting the severity of the situation. This incident echoes a similar confrontation in 2015 when Andhra Pradesh attempted a similar move, which was thwarted by Telangana security forces.

The Centre’s intervention seeks to restore peace and adherence to the water release agreement, preventing further disruption and ensuring equitable distribution of water resources between the two states.
