Blending education with cultural diplomacy, a group of 20 bright students from Ashoka Group of Schools, Nashik recently concluded an enriching international tour to Vienna, Austria. Over the span of a week, students engaged with global institutions, participated in international discussions, and showcased India’s cultural legacy emerging as true young ambassadors of change.
The tour’s centerpiece was a visit to the United Nations Office in Vienna and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where students not only explored the workings of global diplomacy but also took center stage themselves. During a special UN Symposium, student leaders confidently presented on four major Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 5 (Gender Equality)
- SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)
- SDG 13 (Climate Action)
- SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)
Their presentations were applauded by the audience, including Ms. Nidhi Dhiman, First Secretary and Commercial Representative from the Indian Embassy in Austria, who appreciated their clarity, commitment, and dignified representation of India.
The students added a touch of Indian classical heritage to this international forum with a soulful Kathak performance, creating a memorable fusion of intellect and tradition that deeply resonated with the global audience.
An inspiring highlight of the journey was an interaction with Her Excellency Herta Margarete, Princess of Tuscany, and members of the Habsburg Royal Family. Impressed by the cultural performance and the students’ global outlook, the royal guests honoured the delegation with commemorative badges recognizing their role in cultural diplomacy.
The group also visited the prestigious Ban Ki Moon Centre, where they attended an insightful workshop on Green Jobs and sustainability. This session explored how climate responsibility can translate into meaningful career opportunities—preparing students for future roles in eco-conscious industries.
Another rare opportunity was granted at the Austrian Parliament, where students received an exclusive guided tour. They learned how Austria’s legislative system functions and how sustainability is integrated into its governance—drawing connections to India’s own democratic practices.
Equally enriching was the visit to the renowned Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Here, students engaged in an interactive dialogue with the Director, discussing India’s evolving global role, BRICS partnerships, and the challenges of international relations. These conversations deepened their understanding of diplomacy, multilateralism, and global cooperation.
The itinerary wasn’t just about institutions it was also about culture and history. Students toured iconic Viennese landmarks, including the Vienna Opera House, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the House of Austrian History, and the Kreuzenstein Castle, where they explored medieval artifacts and experienced the grandeur of European heritage.
The grand finale took place at the Lazarus Union Investiture and Gala Dinner, where the students once again took to the stage for a refined Kathak performance, earning standing ovations and international honours from the organizers.
This exceptional tour was made possible by Dr. Dinesh Sabnis (AGM – Sports and Activities), who led the planning and coordination, along with the unwavering support of mentors Ms. Meghana Joshi (Headmistress Secondary Section) and Ms. Mrudula Tare (Kathak Dance Educator).
Ms. Astha Kataria, Managing Trustee of Ashoka Group of Schools, emphasized the deeper purpose behind such initiatives:
“Our mission at Ashoka is to go beyond textbooks. We aim to develop leaders who are informed, empathetic, and ready to engage with the world. The Vienna UN tour is a step towards cultivating global citizens with Indian roots.”
As these students return from Vienna, they bring with them more than souvenirs they return with new perspectives, strengthened confidence, and a shared sense of responsibility as future changemakers.
