Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a warm and culturally rich welcome by the Indian diaspora in Mauritius on Tuesday, as women from the community honored him with a traditional Bihari musical performance known as ‘Geet Gawai.’
Geet Gawai, a traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble, represents the cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women from the Bhojpuri belt of India. It plays a significant role in social and religious ceremonies, especially weddings. In December 2016, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in recognition of its cultural significance.
Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi took to social media platform X, stating, “Deeply touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in Mauritius. Their strong connection to Indian heritage, culture, and values is truly inspiring. This bond of history and heart continues to thrive across generations.” In another post, he added, “Memorable welcome in Mauritius. One of the highlights was the deep-rooted cultural connect, seen in the Geet-Gawai performance. It’s commendable how the great Bhojpuri language thrives in the culture of Mauritius.”
As he arrived at his hotel, PM Modi was further greeted by enthusiastic members of the Indian community waving the Indian tricolour and chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’
Earlier, Modi landed at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, where he was received with a garland by his Mauritius counterpart, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Sharing his excitement about the visit, Modi posted, “Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors.”
Along with PM Ramgoolam, several high-profile dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Mauritius, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and Chairperson of Grand Port District Council, were present to welcome Modi. In total, 200 dignitaries attended the reception.
During his visit, PM Modi is set to meet with Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool, hold discussions with PM Ramgoolam, and engage with other senior leaders and political figures. Additionally, he will address a community program in the evening.
