Three teenagers tragically lost their lives and another was injured in a tractor accident near Charra village in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district on Wednesday. The boys, who had skipped school, were riding the tractor when it overturned while returning from a joyride.
The deceased were identified as Pritam Chandrakar (16), Mayank Dhruv (16), both residents of Mogra village, and Honendra Sahu (14) from Charra. The injured boy, Arjun Yadav, hails from Banagar. According to police, the incident occurred near Charra, under the jurisdiction of Kurud police station.
The group of friends had taken out the tractor, with Chandrakar behind the wheel, and drove to Kurud for a ride after skipping school. However, as they were returning, Chandrakar reportedly lost control of the tractor, causing it to overturn near an agricultural college at Charra.
Three of the teenagers were trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene, while the fourth, Arjun Yadav, suffered serious injuries. The police were alerted by local residents and immediately arrived at the spot to transport the bodies for post-mortem and take the injured boy to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities have registered a case and are continuing their investigation. Early reports suggest that the poorly maintained “side shoulders” (embankments) along rural roads could have contributed to the accident. Officials noted that these embankments in the Charra area are damaged, with pits along the road edges, which may have led to the tractor overturning.
The tragic accident has raised concerns about road safety in rural areas, especially with regards to poorly maintained roads and infrastructure that may contribute to accidents of this nature.
