In response to ongoing concerns over law and order in the state, the Manipur government has extended its suspension of mobile internet services for three additional days. The ban, which has been in place since November 16, will now continue until 5:15 PM on November 23 in seven districts across the state.
According to a directive from the state’s home department, the extension of the suspension includes mobile internet, data services, as well as VSATs and VPN services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur. The suspension has been implemented as part of efforts to maintain peace and public order, and to prevent the spread of misinformation and false rumors via social media platforms.
The initial two-day suspension was announced on November 16 to curb potential unrest and activities from anti-national and anti-social elements. The internet ban was then extended for an additional two days on November 20, with the government citing the ongoing law and order situation. The state’s move comes after intense protests and a curfew imposed in several districts following the recovery of six civilian bodies—three women and three children—who had gone missing after an encounter between armed militants and security forces on November 11.
While the mobile internet ban remains in effect, broadband services were partially restored in certain areas, including government offices, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other essential services. However, mobile internet services remain suspended across the state, with exemptions only granted by the state government on a case-by-case basis.
This ongoing disruption highlights the tense situation in Manipur, as the state continues to grapple with public unrest and efforts to prevent the spread of provocative content through social media. The extension of the mobile internet ban reflects the state government’s priority to ensure stability and prevent further escalation of violence during a challenging period.
Authorities have assured that the suspension of internet services is being carried out in the public interest and to maintain communal harmony. However, the decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some residents expressing frustration over the hardship caused by the internet shutdown, especially for daily communications, work, and educational activities.
The government has emphasized that the ban will remain in effect until the law and order situation improves, with further evaluations to be made before any decision on lifting the restrictions.
