Kashmir’s first snowfall of the season has brought picturesque views of the Valley, attracting tourists to popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg. However, the early snowstorm has also led to travel disruptions in the region.
According to officials, light intermittent snowfall continued in several higher-altitude areas on Tuesday, following the initial snowfall that began on Monday night. The snowfall, which blanketed many parts of the Valley, was particularly intense in the upper regions of Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts. The thick snowfall created a stunning landscape that drew many visitors eager to witness the season’s first snow.
While the snow has created enchanting views, it has also resulted in the temporary closure of key routes, including the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, as well as other vital roads in the higher reaches. The snowfall caused significant disruptions to transportation, particularly in mountainous areas. The authorities have worked tirelessly to clear snow from major routes, including the Srinagar-Leh highway, which was reopened for traffic by early Tuesday morning.
However, Mughal Road, which connects the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu region, along with Sinthan Top, linking Bandipora with the Gurez sector, remains closed due to snow accumulation. The Border Roads Organisation has been actively engaged in clearing the snow to restore access to these important routes.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted generally dry weather until November 13. However, from November 14-15, the possibility of light rain or snow in the higher reaches of Kashmir remains, with scattered light rain or snow expected across the region on November 16.
