Tragic Incident: Woman Dies After Consuming Contaminated Momos in Hyderabad; 20 Others Affected by Food Poisoning

A 33-year-old woman tragically lost her life, and 20 others fell ill after consuming momos from a street vendor in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills area. The victim, identified as Reshma Begum, along with her two daughters aged 12 and 14, purchased the momos on Friday in Khairatabad. Shortly after eating, they began to experience severe symptoms, including diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting.

Reshma succumbed to her condition on Sunday morning, leaving her daughters under medical care. Described as a single mother, she is survived by her daughters, who are currently receiving treatment.

Ram Babu, a Sub-Inspector at Banjara Hills Police Station, confirmed to news agency PTI that the police received a complaint regarding Reshma’s death, which prompted an investigation into the food vendor. The inquiry revealed that the vendor had been operating without the necessary food safety license and was preparing food in unhygienic conditions. Disturbingly, the dough used for the momos was found stored in a broken refrigerator without proper packaging.

The police have detained two individuals running the momo stall and have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against them. Additionally, food samples have been sent for lab analysis to determine the cause of the contamination.

Following the family’s complaint, authorities from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s food safety department collaborated with police to locate the street vendor responsible for the contaminated food. Investigations continue as the community grapples with the severe implications of this tragic incident.
