The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood alert for Bihar, prompting the state’s disaster management department to take precautionary measures. Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused water levels in multiple rivers, including the Kosi and Gandak, to rise significantly, increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable regions.
The Bihar Water Resources Department has declared a flood alert for areas along these swollen rivers. The IMD bulletin, released on Friday, warned of heavy rainfall in several districts, including West and East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Patna, Jehanabad, Madhubani, and Bhojpur. Officials remain on high alert, ensuring preparedness to mitigate the impact of any potential floods.
In addition to Bihar, the IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall for other regions, including Saurashtra & Kutch in Gujarat, East Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. The persistent downpour across these states has raised concerns about localized flooding and possible disruption to daily life.
Mumbai Braces for High Tide Warning
Meanwhile, Mumbai has also been put on alert following heavy rainfall, with authorities issuing a high tide warning for the coastal city. The heavy downpour has already led to waterlogging in some areas, and with the high tide expected, the risk of further flooding remains. Municipal authorities have been urged to stay vigilant, and residents are advised to avoid coastal areas during the high tide.
Preventive Measures in Place
In Bihar, disaster management teams are being mobilized to monitor the situation closely and respond quickly in case of emergencies. Officials are also keeping a watch on river levels and working to strengthen embankments where necessary to prevent breaches.
